How to Hold A Pen Properly
These short stories portray a dramatic reflection of the problems that the Philippine nation faces as a whole. It was done in a simplistic manner but its beauty lies in its plot and the many symbolisms it carry. These were written with the purpose of inspiring a change.
An act, a word, a thought, a meaning
Of mind perceiving, of heart believing
A talk, a sign and a heartbeat hearing
Vital in today's communication and living
Society in present is peculiar as ever,
With a network of signal binding us together
In this nation of ours a war is at present
A war on drugs though right is indecent
But with the movement of the eyes and mouth altogether,
And the protest of the hand, feet, body thereafter,
Inhumanity and problems could very well begone,
From the light and beauty communication has shun
A thought is a seed of beauty and prowess,
Flourished with listening, empathy and confidence
So water that seed with words and you'll see,
How meaning and thought make a rose of beauty
So in the 21st century let us continue changing,
In effective and efficient communication using
An act, a word, a thought, a meaning,
A talk, a sign and a heartbeat hearing

ANECDOTE

It tells a story of war and pain, and how a trauma can be overcome without necessarily forgetting the past - without losing the power to remember so that it is not repeated again
Memories of the Past
Klister Nesas
A siren blared over the distance. Maybe it echoed enough in my head that it brought me back to the siren of 30 years ago. Back then, the siren had been ghastly. It brought with it waves and waves of torment – of gunshots, bombs, and the death of a young girl’s father.
A breeze suddenly swept dust on my eyes which caused me to rub it. I miss my father. Had he been alive, life would have been fuller. He always had stories to tell be it of ancient tales of gods and reincarnation or of ghosts from the cemetery. He would joke of how his cows are more important than me but always showed otherwise. He had always been a man of showing rather than telling, but he cherished us dearly. He never agreed on getting me a fixed marriage unlike most people because he wanted me to dictate my own life. Life was wonderful for me and my family.
That was until the war – the war that killed my father. This same siren had been playing when it happened, back then it had been a signal of an attack. My Mother and I scurried to hide and my Father chose to stay. He was brave. But I wish he wasn’t. I never saw him again.
Up until a year ago, this siren that I hear still terrified me. It is the ghost of my father and thousand others. It is not easily forgotten. But I realized that I don’t have to, I just have to recognize. Life was ahead of us but we are not blind of the past. And so we carried on.
My mother taught me academics. Normally, young girls like me are only expected to take care of everything in the house and rely on husbands, but my parents had always thought that we are greater than what society dictates we should be. And so we created our own path different from most, one where women are powerful and valued.
The siren stopped.
I looked up to the open sky and thanked God for letting me survive these hardships. The sun’s heat felt warm like an embrace from 30 years ago. When I think about it, the same sun over me now is still that same sun back then. I look at it and it is unchanging. But the world has changed. I have changed. The scars that I had had healed and it has made me ever stronger. The sacrifices that were made hadn’t been in vain. I am living and that is proof enough.
My father gave me this world to live in, and he would have liked it very much. His sacrifice was sad but is something I am most grateful of. But such is life. And such is death. And so we march forward with the knowledge of the past to make better of the future.
I stand up from my seat and began to walk on this world that my father and many others from history have built. Life carries on.
